Corruption is a huge problem in India as everyone knows and this is day-by day increasing with possible collapse of entire system or even democracy.. What can be done to bring the officers accountable? My thinking is, IAS officers are key people who ignore or take part in this corruption since every file has to move through them.. Also, the political bosses...Sometime i feel like getting trained in high tech surveillance in US (the most advanced) and expose these folks to Media or file case in Court through a grass roots organization..Any ideas what/how can be dealt with this menace. Is their any hope for India in this?Thx

6 Vote(s)

Hi all,I'm planning to R2I in Summer 2011 (family reasons) with wife and 2 kids. I will have my parent's house to settle in, so no mortgage. I will not be able to move with job, so will have to look for a new job in India (Pune). I'm in IT management, with over 10 years experience in database development.Should I be looking for a job from here? Any good resources for that? Or should I look after I get to India?Any help/information will be appreciated. Thanks. G

8 Vote(s)

_Experience: Never thought High level Professional Decent (?)Tenant can behave like this: _ We rented our house in Gurgaon 4 months ago. My husband was in the US so I took care of these things before leaving to US. The person approached me for the rent (for his sister/BIL) was Major in Army and looked decent and was very polite and gentlemen type. I spoke and met with the prospective tenant and seemed ok. Although from the very beginning I didnt like the way he was boasting/ bragging about his so BIG & NICE house and sooo expensive & classy paintings in their house in southern India but I brushed it off thinking most North Indians are perfect in this art and is very normal thing from them to expect (my fault- I was in hurry to put it on rent before leaving to US) They were very particular about the cleanliness and good upkeep and bragged a lot about how they are going to convert our house posh too (which was very simple looking according to their taste-wondered at that time also why they are taking on rent then?). In other words, they belong to very elite class and upscale living. We repainted the house and did whatever he requested is must for him to live in that house. He was shifting from south India city to Gurgaon for 2 years as a CEO of a fashion house (MNC) and his wife is VP in a well known skin and slimming center. No doubt came to my mind ever that anything can go wrong later. Lease was signed on normal terms. One month rent and 2 months security was paid as it is norm in Gurgaon. Things started to seem difficult only after one month. I also moved to US. We always had to remind him for depositing the rent every month. He used to deposit the rent after many reminders and that too after 15-20 days past the due date. We assumed may be they are settling down. But After 2.5 months he didnt pay the rent and stopped replying to our emails and never picked up phone. His army BIL used to pick up the phone and told us that his family moved back to their home in south India city because they couldnt take Gurgaon heat! And that he is in so much stressed and having some problems in his job too you dont worry about the house upkeep he was always very polite and sweet talking and assured us that any loss will be borne by him (if any) he wont stay without paying rent even for one day. That means the tenant will also leave the house in few days but dont know when according to the lease terms either party has to give 2 months notice. He was not showing any intentions to leave the house or paying rent. We were also confused as to what to do finally we gave him the notice to vacate the house. Fast forward to present: After receiving notice to vacate, he told us that because of uncertainty in his job he is in a financial difficulty and we should deduct the rent from his deposit. In good faith and trusting his words, we agreed only for one month adjustment and asked him to pay one more months rent. He and his BIL assured us that house is in very good condition, in fact better than what we handed over to them so dont worry about your security deposit. We still believed him. Last Sunday my sister visited the place to pickup our mail and was shocked to find about the condition of the house. Just in 4 months they have made a complete mess of the house- removed fixed fixtures (?) without our knowledge, curtains were removed in such a manner that most of the window treatments are broken and cement coming out, walls were so damaged that the house needed paint again. They used acid on marble flooring!!! We were horrified. We tried calling his BIL and Mr.CEO so many times, nobody picked up the phone, no replying emails and hardly available at home. So now we are left with no security deposit to cover the cost of the damage and unpaid bills and huge mess created by these elite people. still living in our house just told us in one line in an email that he will vacate whenever he feels like without mentioning any date. My husband is saying that seeing condition of tenants in India- that you should be thankful that he is thinking of at least leaving!!! And just eat the loss and move on! But I am very-very angry and feeling cheated by the so called nice behavior. Never ever thought that at this level of profession somebody can be so unprofessional and so insensitive to others house! Just wanted to share with everybody our experience: NOBODY SHOULD SIMPLY ASSUME GOOD/PROFESSI0NAL BEHAVIOUR EVEN FROM A HIGH LEVEL OR PROFESSIONAL PERSON. We always are careful from maids, drivers and so on and how we believe that a person of this status never do something like that. Incidentally, (knocking on the wood) I have never come across dishonest/unprofessional maid or driver (their earnings are meager in comparison to that of CEOs) in our 5 years of stay in India. Sadly, this incident making us wonder that - Is it possible for us to believe or trust anybodys face value or words in future? I was wondering thats how in India nobody wants to believe anybody and thats how they become insensitive to others problems in long run or to any genuine person. He took advantage of us being away and our nave/trusting nature.

7 Vote(s)

Hi, I am R2Iing! I need some urgent suggestion. I have a few credit cards issued in this Country. Should I keep all the major ones or just keep one/two and cancel others? Though I might be moving I would be visiting the country regulary and might even stay in US for longer in future. I might come back if my kids choose to be here for a while when they grow up. I am a USC. I believe cancellation of credit cards effects your credit histroy, specially if they have been held for a long time. I have cards (thought I may not have been using them since a while) that I have had for long. Please advise.

8 Vote(s)

Could not find any other thread specifically dealing with this topic (which I think affects a lot of people), hence starting a new thread. Situation:X joins a US company in India and is awarded 1000 stock options for stock that is to be listed in the NASDAQ. X gets a indian salary of 10 lacs INR. let us say stock vests fully 2 years later and X can sell it for 10 USD and make a gain of (10-1)*1000 = 9000 USD. The stock is in a schwab or etrade account. Since X is a US citizen with a SSN, taxes are automatically withheld by the brokerage and sent to IRS. In addition on the same gain of 9000 USD GOI considers that as income and taxes it. Typically income sourced in the respective country is taxed by the local tax authority first and then one can claim credit for taxes paid in the other jurisdiction. That is for indian salary we pay tax to GOI and show that in the US return wherein the same income is deemed taxable and tax computed on it but since we show that we have paid taxes to GOI we can claim credit from IRS. Vice verca applies for say US fund investments. The challenge is that in the case of US stock options awarded by a US company for employment in India, is the gain on that considered US source income or India source income because it is US stock? Since it is US stock, if IRS taxes it first and it is considered india source income by GOI then GOI will not give credit for US tax paid and it will be double taxed. This is the situation I am facing with both RSU as well as stock option granted by a US MNC in India (otherwise I get paid in INR). I sold 10 RSU, since it is in a schwab account, and I have a SSN, tax was automatically deducted and sent to IRS. The question in this unique case is what source income is this considered and who gets to tax it first and who do I claim credit from? Neither my accountant nor the company is clear on this. I am sure there are many others in this situation. How is this treated from a tax perspective? Interested in hearing from others who have experience in this aspect?

8 Vote(s)
