Hello Folks , Introduction :I ve been an avid albeit a silent follower of this forum and I must say its very addictive and a fantastic community with a wealth of info .About me .. Long Story Short - H1B - GC - USC = 14 Years. Both me and my wife are in IT(last 5 years ) ,two kids 13 and 8 ..DO I hear “are you out of your mind calls” ? Yup My elder Son will be going to 8th grade next year ! Life has been good and predictable with Stable Job , ferrying kids to classes , weekend pilgrimage to the holy Trinity (Costco , Trader Joes , Indian Stores ) , weekend dinners at thai , sweet tomatoes , Desi Potlucks with drunk desis bashing india , bi annual India trips , Parents visits , Bit of travelling …I was content on living this life with friends , being a fitness enthusiast , running , Hiking , biking , Gym and a commute of 2 miles .. Couldn’t ask for more . _Why R2i :_ My wife has been a fierce advocate of R2i from the day we moved to America , and I was 50 – 50 on the r2i Idea .My heart says go to India spend time with family , but when mind takes over , R2i Goes out of the window ! Have been going thru this dilemma for a few years now .. Had a real opportunity to move in 2007 , when I got an internal transfer to Mumbai and I was all set to move …Then my Wife got a job in IT and we got our GC .. I succumbed to the temptation of more money ..So postponed the Plans for a few years ..I always thought of moving the next year or two (X+1 ) .. Things did go well for a few months and then my Dad was diagnosed with Renal Failure which was a life changing event for him ..So my R2i Plans firmed up again and we put the house for sale in the market and waited for it to sell .. And yes it was in 2008 , when the RE Market was scaling new depths !! Could never sell the house , so pulled it out of the market and continued living here with a wait and watch attitude .. My Dad seemed to do well for 3 years ..but things deteriorated fast and we lost him in 2011 .It was such a shocker for me .. All I could do was to silently weep and wished I had gone back earlier to spend some time with him .With time , I slowly got out of the shock , but the biggest Challenge was my mom . she was living alone in Chennai for a few months and she decided to a move to a Retirement community in Chennai which typically caters to Parents whose kids are outside India ..It was a heartbreaking decision for us and of course I became an instant deserter in the eyes of my relatives .. Even though it was a tough decision ,now it seems like the best decision for my mom and us .. She Loves it over there .She has recreated her own life with friends , activities and freedom with security , and dignity that she deserves .It did relieve some pressure off me for a while .Applied for Citizenship and got it in Sep 2012 .Finished OCI by Dec .Now that we had gotten everything , we decided that lets go back and give it a shot before we call it quits completely ..We decided we ll go back to Mumbai as we both are from there and we have all the family staying there .There are a few “Not so expensive” International schools nearby which follows IB and CIE curriculum ..We have talked to them and they were very accommodative of the fact that my kids have no knowledge of any Indian language and will help them out .. We should Finalize this in the next few days , which will be a major milestone . _Financial Situation :_ Real-estate – Fully paid apartments in Mumbai and Chennai , Couple of small Pieces of land in Blr .Decent savings , Good 401k , House in the US with a mortgage. _Plan of Action :_ Planning to Get the house ready and list for lease .. We might do this for a year or two until we are sure that we are going to be India for long term .With the rent potential it will be enough to cover the mortgage and the maintenance fees .With all this in place we are planning to leave for India around 3rd week of May . _Post R2i Plans:_ Our immediate priority would be to help the kids Settle into school and the system there .As far as Job front is concerned , we decided that one of us will stay home for a year and the other would work .SO whoever finds a job first will be the “man of the house” J .. I have submitted my Profile through some contacts in India …But I do not have any hopes or expectations .Planning to take it as it one day at a time .I am also exploring options of doing something on my own .. but it’s too early for any concrete plans .I am not even sure if this is the right decision , but I thought I need to have closure in this .Unless I experience this I will never be happy .And of course wifey is super excited , so decided to pull the plug /rock the boat whatever it may be .I am going back with no expectations , Prepared (Financially) for being unemployed for at least two years .So if we get thru this successfully we ll continue to live there , else come back here and start again . (At least I can say , “ been there done that “ ) .Time alone can tell whether this is a Successful R2I or a "costly India Experiment" . It felt good writing this and this will be a great motivation for me .This is just the start of my dairy and I will add more in the next few days /weeks .Cheers

6 Vote(s)

Dear Club Forum members.I am the author of a book called "Return to India: an immigrant memoir." In this book, I document the conflict and confusion that I underwent while living in America for nearly 20 years. It traces the arc of an immigrant's life from when people leave and why people return. I taught about the dilemma that is so familiar to you all. I also explain why and how our family eventually moved back home-- to Bangalore. The book is a labour of love. I spent nearly ten years of my life thinking about the homeland; and why and when we should move. So far, I have not made any money through the writing of this book. Royalties will come but only after many, many, many more books are sold. I am partnering with this forum to publicize my book. I hope that some of you will take the time to read it and buy a copy. To that end, I will be posting a short paragraph about the return to India experience. Some of it is good; some not so good; and some merely humorous. It could be photographs and commentary.Through this effort, I hope to reach readers like you, who are the natural audience for my book. Thanks for taking the time to read this; and good luck with your dream!Dream large; live wisely; take risks.RegardsShobaShoba NarayanMy books on Amazon here (http://www.amazon.com/Shoba-Narayan/e/B001HMPMC6)Website: http://shobanarayan.com (http://shobanarayan.com/)

8 Vote(s)
