Suitcase strings used to kill NRI victim: Police

AMRITSAR: The Punjab police have said 17-year-old Amritpal Kaur, a Belgian, was strangled with suitcase strings by her stepfather Mehtab Singh. While informing the Belgian embassy about the arrest of Mehtab through an email, cops also wrote to the victim's boyfriend in Belgium asking him to join the probe in India.
Mehtab, an NRI, was arrested on Tuesday, soon after an email was sent by Amritpal's boyfriend Lakhwinder Singh from Belgium, telling cops about the murder."I received a call from a private number in India, stating your girlfriend has been killed. When I called up her maternal aunt, the information turned out to be true. Now, please give them (killers) the harshest possible punishment," Lakhwinder wrote in his email to Amritsar police commissioner Virender Kumar.
The victim was allegedly killed on the intervening night of June 25 and 26 and quietly cremated next morning, sources said. The suspected honour killing of Amritpal, a middle-school student, who fell in love with a boy of a different caste has shocked everyone, including her maternal aunts.
