NEW YORK: US-based separatist Kashmiri organisations led by the Kashmiri American Council (KAC) held demonstration near the United Nations seeking the world body's intervention to resolve the Kashmir issue.

The two-hour protest was organised to coincide with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's address to the United Nations General Assembly.

In a memorandum sent to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the KAC executive director Ghulam Nabi Fai sought UN intervention to ensure "immediate and complete cessation" of military and paramilitary action by the Indian forces and release of all those arrested in connection with the ongoing insurgency.

It also called for determination of the "status" of Kashmir through a "free vote" of the people.
